NDIS vs Support at Home: Which Funding Is Right for You?

Two separate Australian Government programs, two governing bodies, two sets of eligibility. A plain-English comparison so you know exactly where to start.

NDIS vs Support at Home: Which Funding Is Right for You?

Two systems, one goal — support at home

Australia runs two separate government care-funding systems. They have different governing bodies, different eligibility, and different assessment pathways — even though both help people live well at home.

Understanding which one applies to you is the first step to getting the right supports.

NDIS — for disability under 65

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is governed by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) and the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission.

It funds supports for Australians aged under 65 living with a permanent and significant disability, with a focus on building capacity, choice and control, and community inclusion.

Support at Home — for ageing Australians

Support at Home is governed by the Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Ageing (assessed through My Aged Care).

It funds supports for older Australians (65+, or 50+ for First Nations peoples) who need help to stay safe and independent at home — and it replaces the old Home and Community Care (HACC) program.
